Bad marketing: CollabNet forces registration for Subversion Downloads

By clackwell

Trying to download the Windows binaries for Subversion I noticed that I need to register and login at CollabNet’s site for this. Or maybe I just didn’t see the “click here if you want to skip registration” link.

Assuming the registration and login are required, the following questions arise:

  • Why am I seemingly the only one complaining about being forced into registration for something like the Subversion CLI client?
  • What does CollabNet need registrations of thousands of individual software developers and Subversion administrators for?
  • Does their marketing department think that forcing people to register isn’t an issue for people? Given that I am the only one complaining about it – I guess it in fact is not a problem for CollabNet. A new internet bully is born?

ADDITION 2008-08-06:

Later I noticed that I didn’t see the download section for the Windows binaries at tigris.org. CollabNet offers (I believe) signed binaries. While these signed builds are probably of use to some users, I still find it unfortunate to ask for registration just to lay your hands on these binaries. But at least it isn’t anywhere as dramatic as “locking down” all the subversion binaries downloads.

My bad.
